Chow Down

Chow Down is an annual food and drinks festival serving local, artisan, street food and beverages to a variety of locations throughout the UK. The Chow Down is often brought to Halifax within the summer months and you can experience fun filled weekends in The Piece Hall courtyard with music and hopefully some sunshine! This summer, I visited the Chow Down on August bank holiday weekend and what a perfect weekend it was. With the UK under a heatwave, The Piece Hall buzzed as locals indulged on street food, craft beer and cocktails.

With a sea of pop up food and drink tents, prosecco vans and giant deck chairs, the colourful and lively atmosphere of the Chow Down was reflected from the stalls trading at the event. With three weekends of Chow Down fun taking place in the heart of West Yorkshire, different businesses were handpicked for each event offering a wider selection of food all summer long. There was something for everybody with dietary needs catered for as well as vegan and veggie options. When visiting, I enjoyed Malaysian street food from Nasi Lemak Manchester and a lovely can of chilled ‘Rita Rose’ from Rita Santa Rita. The one thing I loved the most about the Chow Down was the opportunity to try so many different styles of food and drink that I would not usually get the chance to. It opens your eyes to so many unique businesses and encourages networking, learning more about local produce and future recommendations to friends and families.

The Chow Down had a footfall of 120,000 visitors in summer 2018 and this year has supposed to be bigger and better than ever. One difference to this years event was the entry fee when entering the festival. It was £3 per person however this allowed entry for the whole weekend and under 14’s go free, making it a fun weekend for families or tourists staying close to Halifax. The Piece Hall was still accessible on these weekends to enjoy the cafes, bars and other independent businesses surrounding the event. Overall, I think the Chow Down is a fantastic event and I am already looking forward to next years festival! It is great to see the local community brought together through the love of hearty food, drinks and live music on our doorstep.
